Gameiro: "The club hadn’t won a trophy in a long time. It was also the club’s Centenary, and the cup win will go down in history" 🏆 #AMUNTWorld
The striker scored the first goal in the final. He admits to get the chills everytime he remembers that moment.
Kevin Gameiro takes us back to that magic night in Seville.
Whilst every Valencia CF player who featured in the game will never forget the 2019 Copa del Rey final, one player has a special memory of the day as the scorer of the game’s opening goal. Kevin Gameiro, who struck in the first half of the contest against FC Barcelona, spoke to VCF Media on the one-year anniversary of a match that will go down in club history.
“I have good memories of the game. It’s magnificent when you win a trophy -for the players, the fans and the club-, and even more so when it’s been a long time since a club last won one. That gives it a special taste,” says the Frenchman, who had his sights set on silverware ever since he signed for Valencia CF.
“When I arrived here I spoke about how I wanted to win a trophy. We did that in our first year together. That’s very good, and I hope to continue like this. I know that it isn’t easy to win trophies. We have to keep working, but we have the squad to do good things here.
“It was a perfect game. I think that we played with a lot of confidence. We weren’t afraid of playing against FC Barcelona. We knew that in a final, over a single game, anything can happen. That’s how we achieved the trophy.”
As for his goal, Gameiro explains that it was all about his striker’s instinct and his positioning to meet the pass into the box.
“Rodrigo was by the near post and I stayed back to call for the ball there. Gayà served up a perfect ball for me. When I had the ball at my feet, the only thing that I was thinking about was scoring.”
“The club hadn’t won a trophy in a long time. It was also the club’s Centenary, and the cup win will go down in history.”
Although Gameiro’s role in a fantastic day cannot be erased, he is keen to create more such memories -for himself, the team and for the supporters.
“We really wanted to win a trophy for the fans. They were very happy to celebrate it with us, and we enjoyed ourselves a lot with them. We went along a route to Mestalla, for what was a nice party.
We have to keep working to achieve more of these things, because it was a very, very good moment for the fans and for the club. Having played a part in that gives you the motivation to get better. I hope that we have another game like that.”
